Lost and found

I am Anglo Saxon, made in the 9th century

Fashioned in gold and rock crystal

Cloisonné enamel

Showing an image of a man, perhaps Christ

Holding ecclesiastical symbols

Set beneath my crystal

Lost in a dark place for 800 years

Found 400 years ago

My purpose is unknown

It remains a source of speculation

Was I part of a crown, a brooch, a precious jewel?

I am inscribed in filigreed gold around my edge

AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN

Alfred ordered me made

My king was Alfred the Great

Some suggest I am the end of a pointer stick

For turning pages of an illuminated manuscript

I reside in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

I am precious

Priceless

Rare

1200 years old

I am the Alfred Jewel
